Manners

Japan has various manners when it comes to eating.

We'd like to introduce some basic manners to help you enjoy dining in Japan!

"Itadakimasu"

&

"Gochisousama"

In Japan, people press their hands together before and after meals and say a greeting to their food. ( as left picture)

The phrase used before eating is "itadakimasu," after eating is "gochisousama".

When said before a meal, "itadakimasu "expresses gratitude for the food,  the people who prepared it, and the ability to eat.

Similarly, "gochisousama" (said after a meal) conveys thanks for the meal, essentially meaning "thank you for the feast." It also carries the nuance of "it was a delicious meal.
